چکیده

The analysis o f earth surface systems is complicated by mutual adjustments among geomorphic variables. Most statistical models used by geomorphologists implicit ly assumeunidirectional causation. Simultaneousequation models represent an alternative statistical approach by which mutual adjustment mechanisms can be analyzed explicitly. This technique is used t o develop a processresponse model of a small desert mountain I fluvial system in order to examine the system's internal structure and dynamics. I n general, results conf i rm t h e expected interact ions among variables i n the model. Discharge, size of bed material, and the type o f bank material are the dominant factors directly influencing channel width, suggesting that channel form reflects an interaction among hydrologic conditions, the caliber of the sediment load, and the resistance imposed by the channel perimI eter. Results also indicate that local and upstream energy conditions strongly influence t h e mean grain size and sor t ing o f t h e streambed materials at a particular location i n the drainage network, but that bed material caliber has a relatively weak effect o n channel gradient. Although the model contains a selfregulatory feedback loop, the dynamics of this fluvial system appear t o differ f rom the concept o f steady-state equilibrium. When displaced f rom stability by an exogenous disturbance, the variable states d o not return t o or fluctuate around their init ial values. Rather, they converge o n new l imits that are different f rom their previous stable values. This type of response suggests that the system is metastable. The process-response model provides a comparative framework for future investigations o f desert mountain fluvial systems. I

The effects of climate and lithology on the formation of sand ramps around Ernan Plain- South of Yazd

Introduction Sand ramp is a kind of sand dune located on or in the foot of some mountains slopes of arid and semi-arid regions. Although these landforms does not differ from other types of sand dunes in these areas apparently, but, there are significant differences between them from the point of view of slope, sediment grain size, Morphology, sediment homogeneous, stratigraphy, laminatio...

Element Geochemical Analysis of the Contribution of Aeolian Sand to Suspended Sediment in Desert Stream Flash Floods

The interaction of wind and water in semiarid and arid areas usually leads to low-frequency flash flood events in desert rivers, which have adverse effects on river systems and ecology. In arid zones, many aeolian dune-fields terminate in stream channels and deliver aeolian sand to the channels. Although aeolian processes are common to many desert rivers, whether the aeolian processes contribut...

Uplift, Shortening, and Steady State Topography in Active Mountain Belts

We present a tectonic, surface process model used to investigate the role of horizontal shortening in convergent orogens and the effects on steady-state topography. The tectonic model consists of a specified velocity field for the Earth’s surface and includes a constant uplift rate and a constant horizontal strain rate which varies to reflect the relative importance of frontal accretion and und...

Evaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System

Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...
